1. Antwerp
Antwerp is and has been for the last 500 years a special center for diamonds. More than 80% of all rough diamond worldwide (according to volume) are traded over one of the four diamond exchanges in Antwerp. Also, still about 50% of all polished diamonds find their way to Antwerp.
2. India
Considering total carat weight nowadays about 90% of all diamonds are cut and polished in India. According to value the figure is still as high as 60% of the worldwide production (larger, high-quality diamonds of more than 2 carats are still cut in Antwerp, Tel Aviv or New York).
3. Diamond production
Worldwide diamond production in 2014 was 125 million carats - more than 50% came from Africa, aboute one third from Russia and the rest from Canada and Australia. Think about it: 125 million carats are only 25 tons.
4. Market
Over 40% of all diamonds are sold in the U.S. However, China will soon catch up and will be just as important for the diamond trade.
5. Age
Diamonds are very old: Some are even older than 3 billion years!
